18. Acapulco, Mexico

Date: June 12, 1999
Age: 22

Greetings from Acapulco, land of much heat and humidity. Beaches are beautiful, and they are patrolled by the military. We go to see the cliff divers today.
Love, Dad and H-

This is the first postcard I ever received that my dad signed from both him and his current wife. I had received cards from their vacations for a couple of years by 1999, but it was with this one that he finally felt comfortable including her on the card.

It was the first card I received after graduating from college so, maybe now that I had passed another milestone into adulthood, he could be more open about his relationship, maybe. They weren't yet married; they didn't marry until 2002 or 2003 (my brothers and I were told about it a few weeks after it happened). But they were living together, and had temporarily left Florida to live in New York for a few years. My dad was born and raised in Brooklyn, and for most of my lifetime he referred to NYC as "the toilet that hadn't been flushed in 20 years," but all of the sudden it was magical for him again. It was very odd, going to visit them at their apartment those first few times while I was still in college--after all, since his wife is thirty years younger than him (and younger than my brothers), and we are only 7 years apart in age--we're both Generation X! So to see a young woman enjoying domesticity with--for lack of a better word--an old man, just seemed nuts.

Also, it took me a few weeks to get it through my thick skull, but I work at a library, where there are scanners at my disposal. So this is the first postcard that is officially scanned it. Looks a lot better than the past entries, with the cards taped to a brick wall. I will, in time, replace all past photographed cards with scanned copies.
