Years and years ago, I think we were watching a comedy special featuring Bobcat Goldthwait, who had a bit about riding in a small, propeller plane, and he called it a "Buddy Holly killer." Morbid, but it was something my father and I both found funny. I think when Dad resurrected this phrase for the postcard, it had been in our lexicon for at least ten years.
