58. Peddler's Village

Date: August 14, 1979
Age: 2

Today, here in Peddler's Village, we bought you a Christmas gift. You were not too happy about walking around.
Love, Mommy & Daddy

I love this card--or, rather, what it represents. My dad was right--when he says I wasn't happy walking around, it was because I was so terribly bored. And while I may not remember 1979, I remember countless weekends in my childhood spent to placing like Peddler's Village: I came to loathe the verb "antiquing."

I was dragged to all sorts of antique stores, quaint shops, and anyplace that specialized in period furniture in the tri-state area. While certainly not a form of child abuse, one would be hard pressed to think of a young child getting a thrill out of antiquing.

These wasted afternoons at shops don't bother me now, however. There are worse things to be than bored, and I'm sure my parents preferred to have me along than with a babysitter all day while they did an activity they enjoyed.

When we lived in Miami, one night my parents told me we were going to an antiques show at some civic center. Fantastic. I don't remember if I put up any resistance, but obviously went begrudgingly.

When we got there, surprise! They were taking me to see Sesame Street Live. Well played.

As for what Peddler's Village is, exactly, here's how it was described on the postcard 29 years ago:

The "Village Green" at Peddler's Village
Winding brick paths, framed with colorful flower beds and shrubs, lead to the quaint shops and superb restaurant in a colonial setting. Clustered around the VILLAGE GREEN the shops offer a unique variety of hand-crafted and imported wares and allow leisurely country-style shopping.
