We are headed back to Newark so we can go with Charlie Oberly to see Elton John at the Vet. Then I am off to Washington. I miss you.
Love, Dad
This is another postcard during the summer from hell, or at least it was for my parents, as their marriage was unraveling fast, and I, fortunately, spent six weeks away from it all at the University of Pennsylvania.
Charlie Oberly was (is?) the Attorney General of Delaware, and my parents were his friends (okay, probably financial supporters). I think he had a private box at the now-demolished Veterans Stadium (former home of the Phillies) and campaign contributors had the opportunity to see Elton John from the box.
The main reason why I posted this card, though, is because I am heading to Cape May today, my only trip to the beach this whole summer. While not some fanciful, exotic locale, it's probably one of my favorite places in the world, because it's peaceful and relaxing, and has been a constant in my life for the past 22 years. Some years I get down there more often than others, I maybe someday I'll enjoy a life a luxury when I could spend an entire summer there. But for now, I'm happy to get out of the city for just a few days. I'll pick out September's batch of postcards while I'm gone.
