65. San Francisco Cable Car

Date: September 7, 1978
Age: 14 months

We have been riding on the cable car and we enjoyed it very much. We decided that you will be old enough to come next time, and we are sure you'll have lots of fun.
Love, Mommy & Daddy

The "next time" ended up being in 1993, which was our last family vacation (excluding trips to Florida). I don't even think my parents traveled to California without me during that stretch of time, either.

I can imagine them going out to dinner after having called my grandparents in Ohio to check in on me. They miss me, but are grateful for the time away. My mother remarks that Northern California is nothing like I'll ever see growing up in Delaware, and she'd really like to bring me out there someday. My dad agrees, it would make for a good family vacation, and maybe in a few years I'd enjoy seeing the sea lions sun themselves at Fisherman's Wharf, and I'd get a kick out of riding on a cable car. But this conversation was immediately forgotten, and it wasn't for another 15 years would the subject be revisited, and I'd finally visit the West Coast for the first time in my life.

This card contains a lot of promise, and read beyond the context of our lives, one may envision an entirely different future of our family. I don't look on this card with sadness. In fact, that it is misleading is the best thing about it.
