70. Hotel Praia Ipanema

Date: April 30, 1989
Age: 11

This is my hotel in Rio de Janeiro. I ven marked my room (see arrow). From my balcony I can look out to the beach. Very pretty . There is a small pool on the roof.
Love, Dad

After posting yesterday's postcard of Brazil's most famous landmark, I realized that so far I had only posted one other card from Rio. My father was awarded a grant from the NIH to do community outreach based on researching the HIV/AIDS population in Rio. He developed a prevention/intervention program for drug users in the red light districts.

I've decided to post all the postcards I have from Brazil in a row, since they tell their own story. This may have been the biggest project of my dad's career, spanning several years, so it's a very significant time in his life. It was also during this project that he met his future wife, who was his research assistant. From the time of this postcard, however, she was barely 20 years old, so I am assuming he did not meet her for another couple of years, when she entered graduate school at the University of Miami. I remember bits and pieces of many things he told me about Rio, so as I post these cards I will do my best to reveal what I know.
